Unit Artefact
In the picture above, you can see a balloon. It represents the measuring lung capacity lab. We had completed this activity when we were learning about the respiratory system. This activity is called Measuring Lung Capacity. The purpose of this lab was to measure how much air can fit in ones lungs. Oxygen is an important aspect in the respiratory system. Each individual need a supply of oxygen to stay alive. We use this oxygen in many ways such as break down food to release energy, and produce carbon dioxide. We need to constantly take in oxygen from of course the air and push out carbon dioxide into air. The respiratory system basically functions to filter and warm the air we breathe and also to supply cells with oxygen while removing carbon dioxide. And this is when the lungs come in. So basically air moved into the lungs, through the trachea and then eventually back out again. When each breath is taken, the lungs still contain some air inside of it. This is called residual volume. Each inhalation adds air and each exhalation remove the same amount of volume that was inhaled. This lab required each student to measure the volume or capacity of air in the lungs in several ways. I learned what total lung capacity, residual volume, vital capacity, and tidal lung capacity. Total lung capacity is measured as the amount of air in the lungs after a deep inhalation. This is calculated by adding the vital capacity and the residual volume. Residual volume is known to be the amount of air left in the lungs after a deep exhalation. Vital capacity is known to be the air exhaled in one breath. The maximum vital capacity is the amount of air that can be forcefully exhaled after breathing in as much as possible. Tidal lung capacity is known to be the amount of air that a set of lungs can hold during normal breathing. For instance the amount of air that moved in and out of the body during one breath. I have gained a lot of knowledge from this activity and it can be easy used in real life. Since this new information and in general the unit is on the human body it is easily related to our daily lives. Measuring lung capacity can be used in real life because it could help an individual determine how much stamina they have available to use for daily practices, sports and other activities. This activity somewhat helped me understand the unit better. This was because the activity was on the respiratory system, but it definitely helped me understand the respiratory system. The activity helped me understand that our respiratory system need oxygen and then pushes out carbon dioxide, so there is gas exchange involved in the system. The actual experiment with the balloon helped me understand what residual volume, vital capacity and tidal volume. Overall this activity was useful.
